14 Bible Verses for Labor & Delivery.

Here I am, month nine, with the looming angst of labor lurking around all corners of my mind. On the flip side, I’m filled with anticipation and expectation for God to deliver me, as I deliver her.

Many people have asked if I have a birth plan. It’s pretty simple - and I say that loosely - try to bear the pain and birth her naturally. However, to prepare my mind and spirit for such a task, I know I’ll need some promising reinforcements.

…Okay, so I started writing this at 38 weeks pregnant – little did I know Baby Girl had plans of her own to show up days later - and here I am finishing it 19 weeks postpartum. Pregnancy and motherhood will do that to you. As a recovering-eternal work in progress-control freak, I’m learning to graciously accept that.

I decided to leave that bit there to start this post as a reminder of how real those feelings were at the time and how overjoyed I am to be on the other side of labor and delivery. (Sorry, Pregnant Mamas). On the other hand, it seems to be baby season all around me! With a number of friends due in such a short time from now, I figured it was still very necessary to share this post.

As an encouragement, I will have you know, no matter what goes according to plan or doesn’t, no matter what you can or can not handle, no matter what surprises may come along, and no matter how fast or slow your labor is – it’s yours, it’s beautiful, and God is with you. He goes before you, preparing your room and the hands of help all around, just as much as He is currently with you in all your fears and excitement. (Perks of a God who is omnipresent). You will survive, even when it feels like you can’t go on. Before you know it, your crying bundle of naked joy with be lying on your sweaty chest and your life will forever be changed.

With that said, I compiled a list of Bible verses to fight for me when I knew I physically couldn’t fight for myself. I didn’t want to allow any room for my flesh to accept defeat when I had the perfect weaponry for victory. I wrote them down, meditated on them, and made sure Derek knew where to find them so that when I was too weak to read them myself, he could quickly and quietly whisper them into my ear. It was just another beautiful display of God’s design for marriage. Derek and I can interchangeably speak His word and claim His promises for one another and know that that’s even more powerful than if I were to do it on my own.

Combat every contraction and power through each push with the promise that your body was intricately created for this. Soon you will be holding that precious baby, warmly wrapped in your built-for-this loving arms, and all that pain will be a part of your past - and quite honestly, fast forgotten.
