10 Must Reads: Marriage Favorites.
Non-new information about me:
It’s no secret that I am quite fond of reading and obsessively fond of lists. And it’s most definitely no secret that I cherish my husband and absolutely adore being his wife.
So naturally, I have invested an enormous amount of time blending these passions. I have read countless books on marriage and wifehood, I have admired and taken mental notes from couples who are “Hashtag Goals”, and I have tirelessly pursued these wisdom bits in my great effort to live out the kind of marriage that leaves a legacy. And while I’m still brand new and have a ton to apply and learn, these books have been literal game changers.
Think about it, the bible narrative begins and ends with a marriage. The marital covenant and relationship, was always and still is, intended to reflect the covenant and relationship between Jesus Christ and His Church. And to top it all off, the first spiritual attack from Satan himself, against mankind was in infiltrating the marriage dynamic. This is heavy stuff, people! With positively, heavy benefit and reward!
I want a marriage that looks nothing like the junk that gets high ratings on TV. I want a marriage that gives hope and reflects God’s goodness. I want a marriage that is relentless in our joint pursuit of Christ. I want to treat my husband and my marriage like the precious gifts they are. I want a marriage that makes the hopeless romantic swoon and the awkward preteen make weird faces and roll their eyes. I want a marriage that makes the skeptic and broken hearted believe again. I want a marriage that makes our future children feel secure and loved. I want a marriage that makes people wonder if we’re “honeymooners”.
I want a marriage that is other - a marriage that actively chooses “I do” every day. Don’t you?
Now, I understand that reading supplemental books will not make all of that happen. But pair that with taking God at His word, being obedient to His design, and relying on and claiming His promises for your marriage – and you two will be unstoppable, no matter your story, walk, age, or stage.
If there’s one thing I’ve learned about God, it’s that no one and no situation is too far gone for God’s grace, reconciliation, and transformation.
It was challenging to narrow it down to this short list of marriage favorites but those included have each marked and shaped my perspective of #WifeLife. They have opened up a world of Christ centered exploration, understanding, some awesomely painful opportunities for personal growth, genuine joy, and a whole lot of excitement and hope!
